Why I Traded My Wingtips for Work Boots (And What I Discovered In Connecticut)

Hey,

I just spent two days this week with a group of hard-working concrete contractors at the Concrete Foundations Association Executive Retreat in New Haven, Connecticut.

6 years ago, I traded my wingtips for work boots and haven't looked back since. I used to hang out with bankers, but contractors are "my people" now.

I chose to work with contractors for many reasons, but especially because they have the toughest cash flow challenges of any industry (and I should know after spending decades helping thousands of clients across 50+ industries).

Before heading out to visit jobsites, I was invited to share my framework, "The 7 Numbers that Make You A Millionaire Contractor."

The feedback was tremendous as we spent an action-packed 90 minutes together reviewing how you can take home $1M on a $5M contracting business.

Imagine what you can do at $15M, $20M, and $40M+?

Everyone was leaning in and asking great questions like:

• "How do I get paid quicker?" (That's #6 = A/R Collection Days)

• "Should project managers be included in Labor?" (That's #2 = Gross Profit Margin—the KEY number)

• "What numbers should I be looking at on my balance sheet?" (#5 - Current Ratio, & #7 - Equity)

This was not some boring accounting seminar. Nobody wants that, including me.

This is about two things:

1. How do you generate a dollar?

2. How do you keep more of what you already earned?

When you talk about making money, everyone leans in.

A number of contractors approached me after the roundtable discussion and throughout the day. Ideas were exchanged, insights were gained, and I believe lives are going to be changed.

But here's what really struck me:

These contractors could build anything. Pour perfect foundations. Manage complex job sites. Handle million-dollar projects in their sleep.

Yet when I showed them how shaving just 10 days off their A/R collection could put six figures back in their pocket? Jaws dropped.

One contractor pulled me aside: "Patrick, I'm doing $10M and reinvesting $500K back into my company for the future. How much should I be making?" Even though he has good profit margins, I reminded him that the enemy of great is good, and he could be earning 2x of what he takes home today.

He's not looking for technical skills. He's looking for CEO skills.
