The Art of Not Asking for Help (And Why That's Both My Superpower and My Kryptonite)
Saturday Morning Thoughts from a 1966 GenX'er
I was born in 1966, which makes me part of that forgotten generation sandwiched between the Boomers and the Millennials. You know us—we're the latchkey kids who drank from a water hose, stayed out until dark, and never sat in a car seat or wore a helmet when jumping the creek on our bikes.
We learned to figure everything out on our own. Not because we were natural-born risk takers, but because the adults were simply... elsewhere.
Take learning to drive stick shift. Most kids get taught by their dad in an empty parking lot, with patient instruction and maybe a few nervous laughs. Me? I "borrowed" my older brother's convertible with a slipping clutch and taught myself in traffic. Was it worth the beating I got when he caught me? Absolutely. Did I learn? You bet. Could I have avoided the bruises by just asking for help? Probably.
But that wasn't how we rolled in the late '70s and early 80’s.
My dad was more of an indoorsy guy, so I learned to camp and fish from friends whose dads actually knew which end of a fishing rod to hold. Being one of five kids with both parents working meant if I wanted new Nikes or Levi's, I was funding them myself. So at 12 years old, I got a paper route delivering the Washington Post.
Every morning at 5:30 AM. Rain or shine. Through the blizzards of '79 and '82 when the snow was up to my waist. In high school staying out late with the boys made those early mornings feel like torture, but I never missed a delivery.
That paper route taught me more about work ethic, reliability, and self-reliance than any classroom ever could. It also cemented a pattern that's followed me for 40+ years: I don't ask for help.
It's been my greatest strength and my biggest weakness.
The strength part is obvious. I'm a self-starter who doesn't need a manual to figure things out. When I got fired at 53 and started my own business, I didn't wait for permission or a detailed roadmap. I just started.
The weakness? Well, that's cost me plenty over the years. Relationships. Opportunities. Time. Money.
Even now, running a successful business helping contractors unlock trapped cash flow, I still struggle with asking for help. I've invested in coaching programs (because paying for help feels different than asking for it), and I'm getting better. But tapping my network? Asking for referrals? It still makes me uncomfortable.
Which brings me to today's ask—and yes, this is as uncomfortable for me as it probably is for you to read.
Here's the Thing...
I'm really good at what I do. I help contractors find money that's already trapped in their businesses. I make complex financial concepts simple. Cash flow and capital are my specialty stuff every contractor needs to grow without the stress.
My Millionaire Contractor Code reveals the 7 numbers (not 70) that separate millionaire contractors from everyone else working twice as hard for half the reward.
So here's my GenX-style, slightly uncomfortable ask:
If you're a contractor or you know one (family, friend, that guy at the hardware store) I could probably help them.
Maybe they're doing $10 million in revenue, but still paying themselves like they're running a $2 million company. Maybe they're profitable on paper, but always stressed about payroll. Maybe they're growing fast, but can't figure out why there's never any cash.
I can fix that.
Four Ways I Can Help:
1. Contractor Code Assessment - A 2-week financial health check-up. We benchmark their numbers against the top 10% in the industry.
2. 30-Day Sprint - Everything above, plus I work 1:1 with the owner to build a 12-month and 3-year financial blueprint for 7-figure earnings.
3. Millionaire Contractor + Support - Add 60-90 days of support to embed the roadmap and build the monthly rhythms that ensure success.
4. Live Events - Quarterly Contractor CEO breakfasts and intensive 2-day events like the Builder to CEO Summit starting next week in Tampa LINK HERE.
Look, I know referrals are weird. Nobody wants to be "that guy" pushing their friend toward some consultant. But if you know a contractor who's working their butt off and not seeing the financial rewards they deserve, maybe just mention my name.
Or don't. I'll still be here next Saturday, probably writing about some other GenX childhood trauma that shaped my business philosophy.
Either way, thanks for letting this old-school paper boy practice asking for help.

P.S. - If you're wondering, my brother is still mad that I stole his convertible whenever I thought I could get away with it (I never did!)
