Every contractor knows how to read a blueprint.
When I see one, it's hieroglyphics. But you see walls, electrical runs, door openings, and roof pitches.
Yet when you look at your financial reports? Egyptian script.
You're brilliant at building things in the field, but you want more clarity when it comes to the numbers; you want to be a Millionaire Contractor.
After 30 years in banking and reviewing 10,000+ financials, I've discovered most contractors are looking at the wrong reports entirely. Or worse—not looking at all.
Even CFO's want to know these numbers
Last week, Mark, a CFO for one of my clients, asked me point-blank: "Patrick, what are these 2 reports and 7 numbers you keep talking about?"
Fair question. I've been preaching this for months, and it bears repeating here again.
So here it is the exact blueprint I use to diagnose a contractor's financial health:
The 2 Reports You Need:
1. Profit & Loss (as Budget vs. Actual with percentages—not just dollars)
2. Balance Sheet
The 7 Numbers That Matter:
From your P&L:
1. Revenue (broken out by top 2-3 sources)
2. Gross Profit Margin (THE number that makes or breaks you. Labor & Materials dialed into the exact percentage, not a rough estimate or guess)
3. Office Salaries (your next biggest expense)
4. Net Profit Margin (reverse-engineered to what you ACTUALLY take home after debt and taxes)
From your Balance Sheet:
5. Current Ratio (tells me if you're losing sleep over payroll, and have enough money to fund growth)
6. A/R Collection Days (shave 5-7 days = six figures back in your account)
7. Equity (building a house on rock or sand?)
These aren't just numbers. They're diagnostic tools.
