Embracing Your Weakness as a Strength
Have you ever felt like there’s one part of your business that just doesn’t come naturally to you? Maybe it’s sales, maybe it’s finance, or maybe it’s leadership. For me, that weakness has been marketing.
For years, I thought sales and marketing were the same thing. Sales came naturally—I could build relationships, close deals, and connect with people. But marketing? That was my Achilles’ heel.
When I was a commercial banker, I didn’t have to explain what I did. Everyone knows what a banker is. But as a financial consultant and coach, my messaging was unclear. It wasn’t until January 1st of this year, when I decided to focus specifically on helping construction trade contractors get their finances sorted, that my marketing finally started making sense. I have worked with Contractors for decades but finally made the leap to declare they would be my main focus going forward.
Even though marketing is still a challenge, I’ve learned that weakness isn’t a liability—it’s an opportunity for strength.
Construction Lessons: How Weakness Can Be Strength
Construction business owners face this all the time. Here are a few examples of how a perceived weakness can actually be a strength:
✅ A contractor who struggles with tech adoption → Instead of forcing software they don’t fully understand, they hire someone to manage the systems, freeing them up to focus on operations. Their weakness in tech leads to strength in delegation.
✅ A foreman who isn’t naturally charismatic → Instead of pretending to be someone they’re not, they lean into their strength in process efficiency. Their teams respect them for their knowledge, not just their words. Their weakness in people skills leads to strength in leading by example.
✅ A trade contractor who’s great at the work but struggles with finances → Instead of ignoring the numbers, they bring in a finance coach (like me) to guide them. Their weakness in money management leads to strength in running a more profitable business.
The key is recognizing where you need help and taking action. Weakness isn’t failure—it’s an opportunity for something greater.
Power is Perfected in Weakness
This reminds me of a powerful verse:
2 Corinthians 12:9 – ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.’
No one is great at everything. The best leaders and business owners own their weaknesses and find ways to turn them into strengths.
So, what’s one area of your business that you struggle with? And how can you lean into it instead of fighting it?
Let me know—I’d love to hear from you.
To your success,
