Contractors care...until they don't
Most contractors I know care deeply about their people.
Makes sense when you consider how demanding the trades are.
Physically and emotionally brutal.
I bet you wished your only problem was doing the actual work.
That’s probably the easy part.
The hard part?
Weather delays
Supplier issues
Chasing clients for payment
Vendors chasing you
Employees showing up impaired
Safety nightmares
Payroll (that weekly drum that never stops)
Systems that don't talk to each other
Money sneaking out the back door
All before 8am.
And that's just Tuesday.
Running a construction company is not for the faint of heart.
That’s why you see so many “tough guys” (and gals) in the trades.
But here’s what nobody talks about
You've given your employees and clients all your energy and attention this year, and it still feels like it wasn't enough.
That's why it's important at this time of year to take a pause, reflect, and recharge. Because burnout is real, and if you don't pause, you'll become one of those contractors that doesn't care anymore.
Actually, you might be feeling this way now.
Time to reconnect with “why” you started this business
We all have a brief pause between now and the new year, and maybe the best thing you can do for your business is rest.
I'd encourage you to reconnect with why you got into this business in the first place. As the leader of your company, you need to have the energy, enthusiasm, and vision to take 2026 by the horns.
My friend Jerry Aliberti distinguished between consulting and executive coaching in a post that stuck with me:
Consultingfixes your business problems. Maybe it’s a process, or people, or way of doing business.
Executive Coachingfixes you. Your mindset. Your leadership. Your mental game.
If your cash flow system is broken, you need consulting.
If you're too exhausted to fix it, you need coaching first.
Every business needs both.
The question is: Which one do you need now?
If you burn out, the business feels the effect.
Hit reply and tell me which resonates more—fixing the business or fixing the burnout. I read every response.
It's been an honor and a privilege to support all my newsletter subscribers this year.
Let me close by wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
